On January 16, at the Teresa Carreño Theater in Caracas, National Assembly member Nicolás Maduro Guerra called for the restoration of diplomatic relations with the US and Israel. The son of the former Venezuelan dictator gave a speech at the launch of a National Network of Lawyers for the Liberation of Nicolás Maduro, in which he tacitly endorsed interim President Delcy Rodríguez’s policy of rapprochement with US imperialism.

Delcy Rodríguez met in Caracas on January 15 with CIA Director John Ratcliffe, six days after officials from the State Department visited the US embassy in Caracas as part of efforts to reestablish diplomatic relations, just days after the US attack that left around 100 dead in Caracas and surrounding areas, according to the Venezuelan authorities.

On January 5, Maduro Guerra referred to the betrayals within his own government that facilitated his father’s kidnapping. “We will see, history will tell who the traitors were, history will reveal it, we will see,” were the words quoted in a press release from the National Assembly, the Venezuelan parliament, which is controlled by Chavismo.

“Advancing respectful relations with the US and with any country in the world (…) I believe we should have relations with the US, an embassy (…) because it is our self-determination, we could even think about having diplomatic relations with Israel (…) it is an idea that I am proposing here, in the context of diplomacy, these are ideas that come to my mind,” Maduro Guerra said, in his peculiar style.

The Chavista regime continues to rapidly advance its process of political capitulation to the US, while maintaining dictatorial control of the country. The leader of the US regime, Donald Trump, has described Delcy Rodríguez as “a terrific person” on January 14, after a long phone call with the Venezuelan ruler.
