The joint US-Israeli military attack on Iran, which began on February 28 and has left hundreds dead, including more than 165 people at a school in Minab, has once again highlighted the capitulation of the Chavista regime to Trump’s imperialist government. Foreign Minister Yvan Gil issued a statement in which the Venezuelan government lamenting that Iran was attacked in the midst of diplomatic negotiations, without mentioning the perpetrators of the attack, and then explicitly condemns the Iranian government for attacking military targets “in different countries in the region.” Far from mentioning the aggressive policy of US imperialism, the statement laments the “scenario of instability” facing the world and calls for negotiations. In spite of its weak content, the statement was removed from social media within hours of being published, allegedly in the face of US pressure.
The US and Israeli bombings killed the head of the Iranian theocracy, Ali Khamenei. Chávez was an admirer of the Iranian right-wing dictatorship, and considered his alliance with Iran to further the goal of a “multipolar world”. After Maduro’s removal from power during the US January 3 attack on Caracas, the Chavista regime has capitulated to US pressure and abandoned its peculiar brand of antiimperialism, which was in fact aligned with imperialist China and Russia.
The Venezuelan de facto head of state, Delcy Rodríguez, even expressed her solidarity with the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, with whom she spoke by telephone, in relation to the Iranian retaliation on US military bases in that country. US bases were also bombed in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman, and Jordan, all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members, except Jordan. The GCC responded to the Iranian attacks on US military bases by threatening to attack Iran, reinforcing their adherence to the military camp of the US and Israel, as the genocidal Zionist state has extended its attack on Lebanon as well.
